Starting a business changed my life much for the better but being honest I dilly dallied for a while before fully taking the big first steps. It can be very overwhelming the thought of having your own business from creating a business plan to filing your own taxes, marketing and the uncertainty of fixed income. I don’t like to start something that I don’t follow through with so although it perhaps took longer than it should have starting when I did, I haven’t let go of the gas since.
I remember reading somewhere that it takes about 10 years to become an expert in something and even though I am only 1 year into my business, there’s not a day that goes by that I’m not grateful for what I have already achieved. Lots of you will say that, you don’t have a business plan or that you’re not good at marketing, but to be honest with you I had no clue either.
Adapting and learning as you go, I think is a key part of being a business owner, unforeseen circumstances and overcoming things out of your control make you versatile and creates growth. Fast forward to now and things are so much better than having a day job. Here’s some of the benefits I’ve experienced with owning an online business.
No Boss. – For me this is probably the biggest perk of having an online business. As you get older it becomes more difficult to work for someone else and although I have never worked for anyone before, I couldn’t imagine myself accepting authority very well. By the time you are in your 30’s you would have gained such valuable experience by owning your own business that you would be likely to earn more money than average if your scenarios were to change. Even if your boss is awesome being your own boss is x100 better.
Master of your own time. – Another huge advantage of being your own boss with an online business is that you can potentially do what you want when you want. There aren’t many better feelings than going to sleep Sunday night without setting an alarm and letting your body wake up naturally, it leaves you feeling refreshed, happier and less stressed. Fancy a 2-hour break to watch the football? Go ahead. And don’t get me started on the midday siestas.
No commuting. – Commuting is a pain that wastes time, costs us money and leaves us stressed. With an online business some may have the option to work from home with others having the ability, being their own boss to head to work at a time they wish guilt free and leave at more convenient times to avoid rush hour traffic.
Effort & reward. – With almost everything the amount of effort you put into something directly correlates with what you get out of it. This applies to online businesses which for me is both motivational and highly satisfying. Working hard for yourself means you get full credit and no one can take that away from you, but make sure that you are working hard because no one else will pick up the slack.
Location independence. – Taking my laptop and working in a coffee shop is one of my favourite things to do and it is quite liberating knowing that you can work from anywhere in the world. You could even consider moving countries for benefits such as tax relief, cheaper real estate, higher wages and using currency as leverage. There’s nothing more fun than making money and seeing the world at the same time.
